Rising majestically above the plains of Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro stands as Africa’s highest peak and one of the world’s most iconic trekking destinations. For travelers seeking the ultimate combination of success, scenery, and solitude, the Northern Circuit Route offers the most rewarding way to reach the summit.

As part of expertly guided Kilimanjaro climbing tours, this route provides a longer and more gradual ascent, allowing trekkers to fully experience the mountain while maximising their chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). Unlike shorter and more crowded routes, the Northern Circuit is the longest path on Kilimanjaro, taking you across remote landscapes that few climbers ever see.

Beginning on the western side of the mountain, the trail leads you through lush rainforest, expansive moorlands, and dramatic alpine desert before circling the quiet northern slopes. This rarely visited side of Kilimanjaro offers breathtaking panoramic views, minimal crowds, and a deeper connection with the mountain’s raw beauty.

One of the key advantages of the Northern Circuit Route is its exceptional acclimatization profile. With more time spent at altitude, climbers significantly improve their success rate, making it widely regarded as the best route for reaching the summit safely and comfortably.

Many travelers choose to combine their climb with a classic Tanzania safari, creating a complete adventure that blends mountain trekking with unforgettable wildlife experiences in destinations like Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

With Oreteti Safari Africa, your journey is more than just reaching the summit—it’s about experiencing Kilimanjaro the right way. From expert guides to personalized support, every detail is designed to ensure a safe, comfortable, and truly unforgettable adventure.

After breakfast, continue your ascent through the forest as the landscape gradually opens into the heather and moorland zone. The trail becomes less dense, revealing your first clear and dramatic views of the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding wilderness.

As you gain elevation, the terrain changes significantly, offering expansive views across the Shira Plateau—one of Kilimanjaro’s oldest volcanic formations. The air becomes cooler and drier, marking your steady progress toward higher altitudes.

This day is an important part of your acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust gradually while enjoying the scenic beauty of the mountain. By midday or early afternoon, you will arrive at Shira 1 Camp, where you can rest, take in the views, and prepare for the journey ahead.

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp – Acclimatization on the Shira Plateau

After breakfast, you will continue your journey across the vast and scenic Shira Plateau, one of the most unique landscapes on Mount Kilimanjaro. This is a relatively gentle trekking day, designed to support proper acclimatization while allowing you to fully enjoy the surrounding views.

The trail offers panoramic vistas of rolling moorland, ancient lava flows, and the distant peaks of Kibo. As you walk at a steady pace, your guides will monitor your condition and ensure you are adjusting well to the altitude.

By early afternoon, you will arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where you can relax and take in the breathtaking scenery. For those feeling strong, an optional short acclimatization hike may be offered to further enhance your body’s adaptation to higher elevations.

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Moir Hut – Acclimatization Day

After breakfast, you will begin your ascent toward Lava Tower, following a gradual climb through the alpine desert zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. The landscape becomes more rugged and dramatic, with vast open terrain, volcanic rock formations, and sweeping mountain views.

You will reach Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 meters (15,090 feet), where you will take a break and enjoy lunch. This is the highest point you will reach today and plays a crucial role in acclimatization—following the important principle of “climb high, sleep low.”

After lunch, you will descend to Moir Hut, located on the quieter northern side of the mountain. This section of the route is less traveled, offering a more remote and peaceful trekking experience as you begin to circle Kilimanjaro.

This day is physically demanding but extremely beneficial for your body’s adjustment to altitude, significantly increasing your chances of a successful summit. As part of our expertly designed Kilimanjaro climbing tours, your guides will ensure a steady pace and monitor your condition throughout the day.

Trekking

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp – Into the Northern Circuit Wilderness

After breakfast, you will leave Moir Hut and begin your journey along the remote northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro—a section of the mountain that few climbers experience. This marks the true beginning of the Northern Circuit, where the trail becomes quieter, wilder, and incredibly scenic.

The route gently ascends across rolling alpine terrain, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Kenyan plains to the north. With fewer trekkers on this side of the mountain, you will enjoy a sense of solitude and a deeper connection with nature, making this one of the most unique days of the entire climb.

As you traverse this untouched landscape, your guides will maintain a steady pace to support acclimatization while allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty around you. The air is crisp, the skies expansive, and the silence of the mountain truly remarkable.

By afternoon, you will arrive at Buffalo Camp, where you can relax and take in the stunning views of the northern wilderness. This section of the climb highlights why the Northern Circuit is considered one of the best options within our expertly guided Kilimanjaro trekking tours, offering both exceptional scenery and optimal acclimatization.

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave – Remote Northern Slopes

After breakfast, continue your trek across the peaceful northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, following a steady trail toward Third Cave Camp. This section of the Northern Circuit remains quiet and less traveled, offering a truly exclusive mountain experience.

The path gently ascends through alpine desert terrain, with wide-open landscapes and spectacular views stretching across the northern plains. On clear days, you may even catch distant views toward Kenya, adding to the sense of scale and remoteness that defines this route.

Today’s trek is shorter and less demanding, allowing your body additional time to acclimatize before the final ascent stages. Your guides will ensure a slow and consistent pace, helping you conserve energy while adapting to the increasing altitude.

By early afternoon, you will arrive at Third Cave Camp, where you can rest, enjoy your surroundings, and prepare mentally and physically for the upcoming summit push.

Third Cave to School Hut – Summit Preparation

After breakfast, you will begin your steady ascent toward School Hut, your final camp before the summit attempt on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail climbs gradually through the stark alpine desert, with the landscape becoming increasingly rugged and dramatic as you approach the base of Kibo.

Although this is a shorter trekking day, the altitude gain is significant, so a slow and controlled pace is essential. Your guides will carefully monitor your condition while ensuring you remain well-hydrated and comfortable as you prepare for the final push.

Upon arrival at School Hut in the early afternoon, you will have time to rest, organize your gear, and receive a detailed summit briefing from your guide. An early dinner will be served, after which you are encouraged to sleep and conserve energy ahead of the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

This day plays a vital role in your success, allowing your body to recover and your mind to focus before the most challenging and rewarding stage of the climb.

Day 9
Trekking

Summit Day – Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Your summit attempt begins just after midnight. Under the glow of your headlamp, you will start the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and all of Africa.

This is the most challenging stage of the climb, both physically and mentally. The trail is steep and the air thin, but with determination, support from your guides, and a steady pace, you will gradually make your way upward. As dawn approaches, you will reach Stella Point on the crater rim, where the first light of sunrise illuminates the mountain in breathtaking colors.

From here, a final push along the crater edge leads you to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters)—the Roof of Africa. Standing at the summit is an unforgettable achievement, a moment of pride, reflection, and triumph that few people in the world experience.

After taking photos and celebrating your success, you will begin your descent. You will return to School Hut briefly before continuing down to Mweka Camp, passing through different vegetation zones as the air becomes richer and the temperature warmer.

Your Oreteti Safari team will be waiting to congratulate you before transferring you back to your hotel near Kilimanjaro International Airport.
